What Happened with Nicole Kidman & Tom Cruise?
Nicole Kidman is opening up about her divorce from Tom Cruise nearly three decades after it was finalized.
In British Vogue’s September 2026 cover story, the Oscar-winning actress offered rare comments about her first marriage. “Yeah, I got married so young,” she recalled of her and Cruise’s relationship. “Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband. But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love and it was that simple.”
Kidman also revealed that she was advised not to marry Cruise, sharing, “I remember people saying to me, ‘OK, well this is really going to affect your career.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.’ And then I was his ‘wife’ and they were like, ‘See, we told you.’ I’m like, ‘So what? I wasn’t meant to marry the man I love? Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.’”
Kidman and Cruise met and fell in love on the set of their sports drama Days of Thunder in 1989. They married on Christmas Eve in 1990 and adopted two kids together: Isabella in 1992, and Connor in 1995. The pair also continued working together, sharing the screen in Far and Away (1992) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
The couple announced their separation in February 2001, and their divorce was finalized by August. Kidman went on to marry country singer Keith Urban in 2006, and they share two daughters: Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. They separated in 2025 after 19 years of marriage and finalized their divorce in January 2026.
As for Cruise, he dated his Vanilla Sky (2001) co-star Penélope Cruz from 2001 to 2004 and then moved on with actress Katie Holmes. They welcomed their daughter, Suri, in April 2006 and tied the knot in November.

Cruise and Holmes divorced in 2012, and since then, the Top Gun star has been estranged from Suri (likely due to his ties to the Church of Scientology). They were last seen together at Disney World in July 2012.
In 2023, a source told Page Six that Cruise was not involved in his daughter’s life and hadn’t seen her in many years. Three years later, the outlet reported that Suri officially severed ties with her famous father by legally dropping his last name. She now goes by Suri Noelle, which honors her mother, whose full name is Kate Noelle Holmes.
Sources told the National Enquirer that Suri’s decision to drop “Cruise” from her name has upset the Mission: Impossible actor. “He’s very down in the dumps,” an insider claimed. “It’s not just the pain of her distancing herself even further that’s tormenting him, it’s also all the attention on him now for this.”
The outlet noted that Cruise doesn’t have many friends “to lean on,” but former pro soccer player David Beckham—who’s estranged from his eldest son, Brooklyn—is offering support.
“David Beckham is like a brother to him and someone Tom considers very wise,” the source continued. “He’s been opening up to David, who’s reassuring him to hang in there and not let all this stuff get him down too much.”
As for why Suri chose to remove “Cruise” from her name, insiders previously told Page Six that she wanted to show “praise” for Holmes and forge “her own identity.” A source reiterated the latter to RadarOnline but also alleged that dropping “Cruise” was “Suri’s way of getting revenge.”
“Tom is one of the most famous guys on the planet, so of course it’s been difficult to cope with the reality that he’s not a part of her life,” the insider said. They added that once Suri turned 18, heading to court to change her name “was kind of a no-brainer because the brutal reality is she has no real ties to Tom, besides biological.”
