Penelope Cruz’ ‘Weekend Bob’ is short, sweet and a little bit sexy
Penelope Cruz is no stranger to a bob. After making long hair her signature for much of her career, more recently the actress has been favouring shorter collarbone cuts and bobs. She’s also been keeping things interesting with a revolving edit of beautiful chops and styles. At Cannes last month, Penelope unveiled a new, lighter sunkissed bronde lob, created by celebrity colourist, Matt Rez. Then, earlier in June, celebrity hair stylist, Dimitris Giannetos, took her cut shorter with a shoulder, skimming boyfriend bob, complete with a side-swept fringe.
Now, Dimitris is helping Penelope demonstrate just how much range the chop has, with some seriously pretty casual-cool styling.
Dubbed the “Weekend Bob” by Dimitris, the look was created for a press day in Los Angeles. So, unlike the glossier styling we saw in Cannes, Dimitris leaned into laidback Cali-girl texture, creating a style that feels a little mussier, sexier and carefree.
Explaining his inspiration in the caption below his post of the cut, Dimitris noted, he wanted to create “something fresh and effortless” keeping the “luxury” of Penelope’s chin/shoulder-length cut, but giving it an “undone flair with a lot of texture”. It’s “the energy you have on a weekend,” he summarised. “Something to make [you] feel free,” he said.
As for achieving the texture, Dimitris shared the details for this, too. “I dried the hair [with] a round brush and then I created some bends [with] a 1 1/4” curling iron in different directions,” he said. And, if you want to get the boxy bob shape, but your hair is heavily layered, Dimitris has a solution for this, too. “I recommend [the] Great Lengths tape-in extensions for extra body,” he advises. And, to keep everything in place, Dimitris misted the style with “a lot” of Elnett hair spray for the perfect hold.
So, for some major off-duty hair energy, we’ll be channelling Penelope Cruz going forward.
