How to choose eyeshadow like a professional
According to Rasa Gardiner, Senior Director of Global Education at Makeup By Mario one of the most common mistakes when it comes to eyeshadow is “to choose shades that are too literal or overly saturated, because they can dull your eyes.” Below, she’s shared her three top recommendations for choosing the right eyeshadow shade for you.
1. Don’t copy the exact colour of your eyes
Shades that are too similar can visually compete with your eye colour, instead of highlighting it. “For example, using a very intense blue on blue eyes can make the iris look flatter instead of enhancing it,” explains Rasa.
2. Texture matters just as much as colour
“Choosing the right formula prevents your eyes from looking heavy,” Rasa says. Mattes are great for contouring and defining the crease, they can also work well blended all-over for oilier lids. Shimmers help reflect light to brighten eyes. They work especially well as a highlight in the inner corner, as a pop in the centre or as a gentle wash all over lids if you want a soft glowy finish. Metallics offer something a bit more high-impact and statement – they’re great for bringing the drama.
