A New Oral Pill May Regrow Hair Faster Than Anything Else Available

If you’ve tried an oral treatment for thinning hair, you know the wait can be discouraging. Many options take months to show any visible change, and some carry side effects that give people pause before starting. New early data on an experimental pill may offer a faster, gentler alternative for women with androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern hair loss.

What the Trial Data Shows

The drug, VDPHL01, is an extended-release oral form of minoxidil developed by Veradermics and is currently being studied in phase 2 trials that NewBeauty first covered when the program launched. As reported by Dermatology Times, New York dermatologist Jerry Shapiro, MD, professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Health, said the early results stood out for how quickly patients saw change.

“There is nothing available that I can give a female who has androgenetic alopecia that will work within two months,” Dr. Shapiro said. “Not only is it rapid, but density is also extremely good.”

Why This Option Is Different

Unlike hormonal treatments such as spironolactone and finasteride, minoxidil has no hormonal activity, so it would not disrupt menstrual cycles or carry the electrolyte shifts some women experience with spironolactone. Dr. Shapiro noted the drug’s extended-release design keeps levels steady in the bloodstream, which may explain both its speed and its favorable safety profile without the cardiac concerns tied to higher, immediate-release doses.

“This drug hardly has any side effects,” Dr. Shapiro said.

VDPHL01 has not yet been approved, and larger trials are still underway, but if the results hold up, it may give women a once-daily option that fits into their routine without the hormonal trade-offs of current treatments. For now, the early data offers a hopeful signal for anyone who’s felt stuck waiting on regrowth that never seemed to come fast enough.
