How should running shorts fit?

What inseam length is best for running?

“There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to inseam length,” details Courtney. “The best inseam depends on personal preference, preferred exercise style, and the level of coverage you feel most comfortable in.

“Some prefer shorter inseams for a barely-there feel and maximum freedom of movement, while others opt for slightly longer lengths for additional coverage and confidence. “The best inseam length often comes down to personal preference and the style of shorts,” continues Laura. “For fitted running shorts, a 6-inch inseam is a great option as it provides comfortable coverage and helps reduce the risk of chafing on longer runs.

“If you’re wearing a 2-in-1 short, a 4-inch inner short is often enough to provide support and coverage while allowing the outer layer to maintain a lighter, less restrictive feel.”

What fabric is best for running shorts?

“The best running shorts are made from fabrics that are lightweight, breathable, and built to perform mile after mile,” details Courtney. “Look for materials that move with your body, help keep you comfortable during workouts, and can withstand regular wear.”

“Look for lightweight technical fabrics that are breathable, sweat-wicking and quick-drying,” recommends Laura. “These help regulate body temperature and keep you comfortable as you run. A good amount of stretch is also important, allowing the shorts to move with your body rather than restricting it.”

How I test the best running shorts:

After calling in a sample from a brand, I’ll wear each pair of running shorts for a minimum of three runs — that’s usually a 5k on the treadmill, a longer run outside, and a hybrid workout, such as Reshape at 1Rebel, to see how they fare in different climates and circumstances.

Every pair is then rated against the following criteria:

Design Are the running shorts fit for purpose — was the material sweat-wicking, quick-drying and lightweight? Were the shorts true to size and comfortable to wear for long runs? Did I have options in terms of colour and design?
Fit Are there petite and tall options? Is the sizing and associated guide easy to understand? Did the shorts twist or ride up during my run? Did the material allow for a full range of motion?
Price point Would I be willing to spend that much on a pair of running shorts again? Did they wear and wash well?
Delivery How quickly did the running shorts arrive, and what were the associated costs?

And, because we’re all different in terms of our body shapes, sizes and favoured styles of activewear, I also asked my fellow shopping editors to weigh in with their favourites. This dictated what styles of shorts and brands I reached out to for samples.

As you’d hope, only the running shorts that impressed made it into this edit. However, I also tried the following, which sadly didn’t meet my standards:

  • TALA’s SkinLuxe Built-In 2In1 Short, £48 — Perhaps I’m simply between sizes, but I found the size L too close for comfort while running, and the XL a little too loose around the waist. Opting for the latter to allow for monthly fluctuations (I retain more water around my period), there was a little too much movement, with both the waist sliding down and the shorts riding up.

Despite starting my journalism career on the showbiz desk of a national newspaper, I pivoted to shopping three years ago and have since penned product reviews for UK titles like Glamour, GQ, Condé Nast Traveller, Cosmopolitan and Women’s Health.
