The 6 autumn makeup trends to know come September

We’re still lapping up summer, but we always have an eye on the season ahead. Since September is fast incoming, we’ve been taking a look at the autumn makeup trends that will take off as the weather gets colder. We dialled up some of the leading celebrity makeup artists setting the trends to get their predictions of what’s coming down the beauty tracks. Alongside romanticising cosy duvet days, we’ll be leaning into gently defined makeup looks and deeper colour palettes.

“I think we’re going to see makeup feel a little richer and more polished for autumn, but still very effortless,” muses top makeup artist, Jenny Ventura, who counts Ashley Graham among her clients. In particular, she predicts “beautiful skin, softly sculpted cheeks, warmer tones around the eyes and a lip that feels intentional.”

Yes, we’ll see classic autumn tones like berry and earthy browns return, but sheer, fresh finishes will keep them from feeling heavy and help them feel modern. “I don’t think people want to look overly ‘done’ anymore. It’s more about enhancing your natural beauty and making it feel elevated,” says Jenny. “Makeup will feel more effortless,” concurs leading celebrity makeup artist, Melissa Hurkman, who works with Kim Kardashian, Cindy Crawford and Gabriette. The vibe? “Soft definition around the eyes, flushed cheeks, diffused lips, and healthy skin that still looks like skin. It’s less about perfection and more about creating dimension in a believable way,” Melissa says.

Below are the autumn makeup trends that should be on your radar.

Blurred lips

One major trend all the makeup artists agree on, is that blurred lip trend, popularised by celebrity makeup artist, Nina Park, will be going absolutely no-where. The signature lip taps up subtle contouring and softly blended shading to create a shape that looks pillowy, without feeling sharply defined. “We’ll still be seeing a lot of blurred lips à la Niña Park which I’m still obsessed with,” confirms top celebrity makeup artist, Leah Darcy (whose clients include Hailey Bieber, Jasmine Tookes, Elsa Hosk, Laura Harrier and Sabrina Carpenter). Meanwhile Melissa predicts “blurred lips will continue to be an emphasis for autumn with more earthy warm tones (like rich cinnamon) on the lips.” Also on board is leading makeup artist, Diane Buzzetta, whose clients include Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber and Camila Morrone. “I think the blurred lip is here to stay. I’ve been really loving the Dior Rouge Dior On Stage Ink liquid lipsticks for this. The formula is super comfortable to wear,” she says. But, alongside blurred lips, “I’d love to see more vampy, structured lip liner looks in chocolate and burgundy tones,” says Leah.
