Katie Holmes’ Response to Suri Dropping Tom Cruise’s Last Name
After her 2012 divorce from Tom Cruise, actress Katie Holmes moved to New York, where she raised their daughter, Suri Noelle. The mother-daughter duo is reportedly extremely close, so it’s no surprise that Holmes fully supports Suri’s decision to drop her father’s last name.
“Katie wasn’t surprised by Suri’s decision to legally drop ‘Cruise’ from her last name because that’s just who Suri is,” a source told Page Six. “She’s always been incredibly independent and confident in making her own choices.”
They continued, “This also wasn’t something that happened overnight. It was a decision that evolved over time, and Katie respected Suri’s process every step of the way.”
The insider revealed that the Dawson’s Creek actress didn’t influence Suri’s choice. “This wasn’t something Katie pushed or encouraged. It was entirely Suri’s decision,” they explained, adding that Holmes believes Suri is “old enough to make her own decisions, and she fully supports whatever she feels is right for her.”

“Katie has spent years raising Suri to think for herself and become her own person, and she’s incredibly proud of the confident, independent young woman she’s become,” the source said. “She’s an adult now, and Katie has always believed those kinds of personal decisions are hers to make. More than anything, Katie just wants Suri to be happy and live life on her own terms.”
Suri and the Mission: Impossible star have been estranged for years, and their last public sighting was in July 2012 at Disney World. When it comes to his feelings about Suri ditching the “Cruise” surname, a source close to the actor told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice, “Tom’s reaction has been almost nonexistent. He’s not angry, he’s not making phone calls, and he’s certainly isn’t trying to change her mind. As far as Tom is concerned, this chapter of his life ended years ago.”
Sources argued that the four-time Oscar nominee had long accepted his and Suri’s distant relationship. “Tom compartmentalizes better than almost anyone,” one claimed. “His career has always been his priority. Once he believes something is beyond his control, he simply moves forward.”
A separate source added, “This wasn’t a shock. The legal name change simply caught up with the life they’ve already been living.”
