Tom Cruise’s Response to Suri Dropping His Last Name

Suri Noelle is the latest celebrity child to ditch their famous last name, according to Page Six. On Monday, July 27, the outlet reported that Suri, the 20-year-old daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, legally dropped her father’s surname.

Voter registration records obtained by Page Six revealed that in October 2024, during her freshman year at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, Suri registered to vote in Pennsylvania as Suri Noelle. The new name is a sweet tribute to her mother, whose full name is Kate Noelle Holmes.

Suri and Cruise have been estranged since she was young; they were last seen together in July 2012 at Disney World, just one month after Holmes filed for divorce. In 2023, a source told Page Six that Cruise was not involved in his daughter’s life and hadn’t seen her in many years.

It’s not surprising, then, that his response to Suri legally dropping his name has been, well, total silence.

“Tom’s reaction has been almost nonexistent,” an insider close to the Top Gun star told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice. “He’s not angry, he’s not making phone calls, and he’s certainly isn’t trying to change her mind. As far as Tom is concerned, this chapter of his life ended years ago.”

Sources noted that a public break like this would be deeply painful for most parents. While Brad Pitt has reportedly struggled with five of his six kids dropping his surname, those close to Cruise claimed he made peace long ago with the fractured relationship he has with Suri.

“Tom compartmentalizes better than almost anyone,” another source said. “His career has always been his priority. Once he believes something is beyond his control, he simply moves forward.”

A separate insider added, “This wasn’t a shock. The legal name change simply caught up with the life they’ve already been living.”
