Why Did Jack Antonoff & Margaret Qualley Split?

After nearly three years of marriage, Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley have parted ways. The couple, who married in New Jersey in August 2023, reportedly had a “rocky” relationship, per People, but they’re still “figuring things out.”

On Thursday, July 9, sources told Us Weekly that Qualley, 31, and Antonoff, 42, had been in a rough patch for quite some time—and the Substance star is the one who “initiated” the separation. 

“It happened recently, but they have been having issues for the last few years. Margaret initiated the separation,” one insider explained. “Both of their busy schedules and distance were factors, along with many other things like lack of trust in the marriage.”

The source claimed that “trust issues between both of them” made their marriage difficult. “They were still trying to work on the marriage a few months ago, but it ultimately wasn’t working,” they added. “At some point, the rose-colored glasses came off for Margaret, and she felt she needed to take a step back.”

According to the source, Antonoff “had expressed to friends” that “it was difficult being married and that there were struggles” in his and Qualley’s relationship. 

Qualley and Antonoff also don’t currently have plans to divorce, and a separate source told People that they “remain a united front.”

“They love each other deeply and are very sweet to each other. They are going through this process with nothing but kindness and unity,” the source said. “The rumors swirling around out there about them just aren’t true.”

News of Antonoff and Qualley’s breakup comes just days after he attended his longtime friend and collaborator Taylor Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce without his wife. Regarding the Golden Globe nominee’s absence from Swift and Kelce’s nuptials, a guest told The Daily Mail they overheard Antonoff telling friends that he and Qualley “had a tiff” right before the ceremony. They also said Antonoff “didn’t look happy during most of the wedding, unless he was with Taylor.”

“Jack didn’t want to put up a facade at Taylor’s wedding when they’re having trouble,” a second source claimed. “It’s been weird with her [Qualley] working and him doing his own thing the last several months.”

The insider noted, “They definitely have lost the spark they once had and it doesn’t look like they’ll fix it. Which is crazy, because they were bonkers for each other at one point and people thought they had something unique.”

Qualley reportedly reached her “breaking point” with Antonoff because she felt he often prioritized his music career over their relationship. “The disconnect between them has created significant tension, and despite the growing strain, Jack hasn’t shown much interest in repairing what’s been broken,” the source continued. “The two are no longer on the same page.”

Page Six reported that Qualley and Antonoff were having issues for a while. One source said that communication was “definitely a challenge” for them, explaining, “Jack could be very particular about how he liked things. He’d often prefer for things to be done the way he thought was best, and Margaret didn’t always feel like her perspective was being heard or given the same weight.”

In April 2026, fans noticed that Qualley changed her Instagram handle from @isimostar—a nod to Antonoff’s band Bleachers’ song “Isimo”—to @sarahmargaretqualley23. She also recently deleted her and Antonoff’s wedding photos from her page.
