GLP-1s Before ‘I Do’: Inside the New Wedding Prep Trend


According to Zola’s 2026 Wedding Trends Report, 1 in 10 couples planning a wedding this year are using GLP-1 medications as part of their wellness journey. While diets, workouts and cosmetic treatments have long been part of wedding prep culture, GLP-1s are quickly becoming the newest way some couples get ready—and for many, that process starts as early as a year out.

Experts aren’t surprised at this shift. “A wedding gives most people what a New Year’s resolution never does: an outfit that has to fit on a fixed date, and photos that live forever,” says New York and Connecticut certified integrative nutritionist and founder of Eat Shed Glow, Coco Pierrel. “It becomes the deadline that finally makes them act.”

But while GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound and others can be effective tools for weight loss, experts caution against viewing them as a shortcut to a specific dress size. Instead, they say a healthy and successful approach is treating weight loss as day one of a longer commitment, not something that ends when the vows do.

Ahead, experts break down the realistic timeline for starting a GLP-1 before your wedding, the benefits and risks worth knowing, and—the part most couples don’t plan for—how to keep the results once the honeymoon’s over.

Why Are More Couples Using GLP-1 Medications Before Their Wedding?

Wanting to put your best self forward on your wedding day isn’t new; people are simply approaching that goal differently amid a new wave of health and wellness trends. “Brides- and grooms-to-be certainly want to feel and look their best on their special day, and many use an upcoming event to engage in an overall health journey that involves improving body composition, improving insulin sensitivity and lowering whole-body inflammation,” says New York board-certified internist and longevity expert Amanda Kahn, MD.

Pierrel says GLP-1s have largely swapped the last-minute weight-loss tactics she used to see. “For a lot of people, it has quietly replaced the old wedding crash methods: the juicing, the cleanses, the last-minute detox,” she says.

How Far in Advance Should You Start a GLP-1 Before Your Wedding?

If you’re hoping to lose weight before walking down the aisle, timing matters more than people expect. Six months is the shortest window experts recommend, but you can begin up to a year in advance. “Any change in terms of recompositioning the body should be slow and measured, so I think 6 months is the minimum runway time,” says Dr. Kahn.

Treat the GLP-1 timeline like any other wedding deadline. “What I tell clients is to treat it as part of the wedding planning itself,” says Pierrel. “A wedding takes about a year to plan, so the GLP-1 belongs on that same timeline, started early and slotted in with the venue and the outfit, not crammed in at the end when the date is suddenly weeks away.”

Pierrel recommends four to six months for smaller goals, and closer to a year for people with more to lose. “That way you reach a stable weight well before the final fitting instead of racing the clock,” she says.

What Are the Benefits and Risks of Using a GLP-1 Before Your Wedding?

One of the biggest advantages of GLP-1 medications is that they can make weight loss feel more manageable. “A GLP-1 quiets food noise, that constant background chatter about the next meal, so the weight comes off without a daily fight for the first time in many people’s lives,” says Pierrel.

Dr. Kahn also sees weddings as an opportunity to build healthier habits. “I think it’s great when patients have an event to get ready for that will jumpstart a healthcare regimen that will help them be healthier in the end,” she says.

It really should be viewed as a starting point rather than a crutch. “Without learning how to eat underneath it, a GLP-1 becomes just another crash diet, and we all know how that ends,” says Pierrel. “The weight comes right back, and often more.”

With rapid weight loss comes the need to make some lifestyle changes, many of which are easily managed but very necessary for successful results. Rapid weight loss also comes with a few non-negotiables. It’s important to eat enough protein and exercise regularly while on a GLP-1 for best results. “Lose weight fast without enough protein and strength training, and a meaningful amount of what you lose is muscle, not just fat,” says Pierrel. “Muscle is what keeps your metabolism running long-term.”

She also notes that rapid weight loss can change facial appearance, which is why some brides and grooms add facial fillers or laser treatments to their pre-wedding routine.

Dr. Kahn says side effects are also worth planning for. “We want to encourage habits that build overall health and support muscle growth and preservation—high protein intake, increased resistance training—while also planning ahead to prevent dehydration and nutritional deficiencies from eating less.”

She adds that some people experience nausea or gastrointestinal upset during the first few weeks. “This is generally transient and mild, but something to keep in mind when starting a new medication around an important day,” she explains.

Can You Take a GLP-1 Just for Your Wedding?

For some people, the answer is yes. You can take a GLP-1 for a short period of time. “Microdosing, a smaller-than-standard dose, is the trend everyone is asking about right now, especially for people with just ten or fifteen pounds to lose,” says Pierrel. Dr. Kahn agrees that a brief course of treatment may be appropriate for certain patients who are looking for a small decrease in body fat percentage.

The larger question, however, is what happens after you end treatment. “Research shows people who stop regain about two-thirds of what they lost within a year,” says Pierrel. But don’t let that discourage you—rather, it’s a chance to use the medication as a way to build sustainable habits. “The drug opens a window that buys you quiet, and a window is not the final solution,” she says. “You still have to build the foundation that keeps it quiet.”

How to Maintain Your Results After the Wedding

Using the medication is not the only solution—it’s part of a well-rounded plan to maintain results long after the wedding and honeymoon. “The people who keep their results are the ones who reach the aisle having learned how to eat and move, not just lost weight,” says Pierrel.

Dr. Kahn’s advice for keeping the results: stick with the same habits that got you there—protein, strength training, hydration—instead of treating the wedding as the finish line to drop them at.

Remember that it’s just one tool in your toolbox that can set you up for long-term health. “The wedding is one day,” says Pierrel. “A healthy household is for the rest of your life.”
