Balloon Trousers Are Trending This Summer: 7 Chic Outfit Ideas
I’ll be honest: balloon trousers were not love at first sight. When they first landed on my radar alongside balloon jeans, I was instantly transported back to circa 2015, when I was backpacking on my gap year and wearing a rotation of questionable elephant-print harem trousers for comfort on sleeper trains. Yet from Copenhagen to Paris, the fashion set has been wearing them with ribbed tanks, lace-up flats and oversized shirts, making a convincing case for these boho bottoms being a summer staple.

Despite their dramatic shape, balloon trousers are surprisingly easy to style. Because they’re roomy through the leg and taper at the ankle, they create a strong visual silhouette that feels elevated even when you’ve simply thrown on a white T-shirt and sandals. They’re also incredibly comfortable in hot weather: loose enough to keep you cool, but a little more interesting than your usual linen trousers or wide-leg jeans.
It’s also worth saying that while this version of the trend is very much having its moment in contemporary Western fashion, voluminous trouser shapes have a much longer history. Similar silhouettes have existed for centuries in traditional dress across South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, including garments such as salwar trousers.
The good news? Styling them is easier than they look. Keep the rest of the outfit relaxed, play with proportions and don’t try too hard. Whether your vibe is boho, minimalist or somewhere in between, there’s a way to make balloon trousers feel like you.
Ahead, how to style balloon trousers for summer 2026 according to a fashion writer.
