Body Smooth | The Body Exfoliator That Started It All – Tropic Skincare

Today, Tropic is one of the UK’s fastest-growing beauty brands. But it all started 22 years ago with a homemade body scrub and a 15-year-old Susie who just wanted to help her mum pay the bills.

The Story Of Body Smooth

Susie grew up in Australia, where mosquito bites were part of life. Her grandmother, a medicinal chemist and toxicologist by trade, had the answer: a homemade body scrub made with lemon myrtle as a hero ingredient. Native to Australia’s rainforests and naturally insect-repelling, it kept the mosquitoes at bay while softening Susie’s skin. It’s also what gives Body Smooth its incredible signature scent.

When Susie moved to London with her mum, she carried her grandmother’s recipe with her. Times were tough, and Susie wanted to help. So, aged 15, she set about recreating her favourite body scrub. Using the kitchen table as a makeshift factory, Susie mixed up the first batch of Body Smooth by hand, poured it into 50 recycled jam jars, and Pritt Sticked the labels on herself.

Then she took the jars to Greenwich Market and offered customers complimentary hand scrubs so they could feel for themselves just how soft the scrub left their skin.

Susie sold out of every jar on day one, and Body Smooth became Tropic’s founding product.

What Makes Body Smooth Different?

Most body scrubs do one thing: exfoliate. Body Smooth does two.

It’s a body polish, which means it’s designed to exfoliate and nourish at the same time. Mineral-rich sea salts, magnesium salts, and coconut coir fibres work together to buff away rough, dry skin. Then, as you rinse, the salts wash off but the botanical oils stay put, leaving your skin silky soft rather than tight or stripped.

What’s Inside?

Golden Jojoba Oil
Light yet deeply hydrating, jojoba oil is a liquid wax with a remarkably similar structure to our skin’s own natural oils. It absorbs beautifully, helping to lock in moisture and leave skin supple, soft, and comfortable after exfoliation.

Macadamia Nut Oil
Rich in moisturising fatty acids, macadamia nut oil helps condition and soften skin. It also naturally contains oleic acid, and palmitoleic acid, which support skin cell repair.

Australian Lemon Myrtle
Native to Australia, lemon myrtle brings Body Smooth’s uplifting tropical aroma to life. Blended with bergamot and lime essential oils, it creates a refreshing sensory experience while helping to rebalance the skin’s natural oils.

What It’s Great For

Body Smooth is particularly good for:

  • Hardworking hands and rough knuckles
  • Dry elbows, knees and feet
  • Prepping skin before self-tan (use it around 24 hours before for the most even finish)
  • Smoothing skin before shaving

How to Enjoy It

Step 1: Polish
Scoop Body Smooth out of the jar and massage it into dry skin, paying extra attention to any rough or dry patches like elbows, knees, heels, and the soles of your feet. We recommend doing this in the shower to keep things mess-free.

Step 2: Rinse
Rinse the sea salts away with warm water in the shower or bath, then massage the remaining oils into your skin. This is the bit people always notice.

Step 3: Nourish
Follow with your favourite body moisturiser or Luxury Body Oil for an extra boost of hydration. For something lightweight, try Body Love Firming Buttercream. For a richer finish, Whipped Body Velvet is the one.

Step 4: Protect
If you’re heading outdoors, finish with a broad-spectrum SPF. Freshly exfoliated skin needs a bit of extra protection from the sun.

Use it one to two times a week to maintain gorgeously smooth and soft skin.

FAQs

What does a body exfoliator do?
It removes the build-up of dead skin cells from the surface, leaving skin feeling smoother and softer, and helping your moisturiser absorb more effectively.

Is a body scrub the same as a body exfoliator?
A body scrub is a type of exfoliator. Body Smooth goes a step further by combining exfoliating sea salts with nourishing botanical oils, so it polishes and conditions in one step.

How often should I use it?
Once or twice a week is ideal for most people.

Can it help with dry skin?
Yes. Regular exfoliation removes the dead skin cells that can make skin feel rough or look dull. Following with a body oil or moisturiser helps lock that softness in.

Should I exfoliate before shaving or self-tan?
Yes to both. Before shaving, it creates a smoother surface for a closer result. Before self-tan, use Body Smooth around 24 hours ahead of application for the most even finish.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Body Smooth is made with nourishing botanical oils and sea salts. If you have particularly sensitive skin, we’d recommend patch testing before use.

Should I wear SPF after exfoliating?
If you’re spending time outdoors, yes. A broad-spectrum SPF is a good habit after exfoliating.

Can I use Body Smooth all year round?
Absolutely. It works just as well on dry winter skin as it does for summer prep.
